सूक्तम् - आपो देवता सूक्त
एको॑ वो दे॒वोऽप्य॑तिष्ठ॒त्स्यन्द॑माना यथाव॒शम्। उदा॑निषुर्म॒हीरिति॒ तस्मा॑दुद॒कमु॑च्यते ॥
स्वर सहित पद पाठएक॑: । व॒: । दे॒व: । अपि॑ । अ॒ति॒ष्ठ॒त् । स्यन्द॑माना: । य॒था॒ऽव॒शम् । उत् । आ॒नि॒षु॒: । म॒ही: । इति॑ । तस्मा॑त् । उ॒द॒कम्: । उ॒च्य॒ते॒ ॥१३.४॥
स्वर रहित मन्त्र
एको वो देवोऽप्यतिष्ठत्स्यन्दमाना यथावशम्। उदानिषुर्महीरिति तस्मादुदकमुच्यते ॥

Translation -
God alone, is your Master, O waters, flowing according to your will. Mighty powers breathed upward fast; hence Water is the name they bear.
Footnote -
Water from the mighty rivers goes up to the sky through the rays of the Sunउत आनिषुः and उदकम् both these words are formed from the root मन to breathe. There is a pun on Ud in उदकम् andउदानिषु: The going up of waters from the rivers and oceans in the form of vapor is a kind of their breathing, hence water is called उदकम्as it goes up.
