रक्षा के लिये प्रयत्न का उपदेश।

पदार्थ

(वरुणः) वरणीय मेघ (अपाम्) जलधाराओं का (अधिपतिः) अधिष्ठाता है, (सः) वह (मा) मुझे (अवतु) बचावे.... म० १ ॥४॥

भावार्थ

मेघ से वृष्टि होकर पृथिवी के पदार्थ उत्पन्न होते हैं, उनसे मनुष्य अपनी रक्षा करे ॥४॥

विषय

'अपाम् अधिपतिः' वरुणः

पदार्थ

१. (वरुण:) = सब कष्टों का निवारण करनेवाला प्रभु (अपाम्) = जलों का अधिपतिः स्वामी है। उसने इन जलों का निर्माण करके हमारे कष्टों व रोगों के निवारण की व्यवस्था की है। ये जल "बारि' हैं-रोगों का निवारण करनेवाले, 'भेषजम्'-औषध हैं, 'अमृतम्' नीरोगता देनेवाले हैं। इनमें उस वरुण ने सब रोगों के औषधों को स्थापित किया है। २. (सः मा अवतु) = चे वरुण मेरा रक्षण करें। जलों का समुचित प्रयोग करता हुआ मैं नीरोग बनकर ज्ञानादि कर्मों में प्रवृत्त रहूँ। शेष पूर्ववत्।

भावार्थ

वरुण प्रभु ने रोग-निवारण के लिए इन जलों को हमें प्राप्त कराया है। इनका ठीक प्रयोग हमें स्वस्थ बनाये। स्वस्थ रहकर हम ज्ञानादि प्राप्त करें।

भाषार्थ

(वरुणः अपाम् अधिपतिः) वरुण जलों का अधिपति है, (सः मा अवतु) वह मेरी करे। (अस्मिन् ब्रह्मणि) इस वेदज्ञान की प्राप्ति में, (अस्मिन् कर्मणि) इस वैदिक कर्म में, (अस्याम् पुरोधायाम्) इस संमुख-स्थापित अभिलाषा की पूर्ति में, (अस्याम् प्रतिष्ठायाम् ) इस दृढ़ स्थिति में, (अस्याम्, चित्त्याम्) इस स्मृतिशक्ति में, (अस्याम् आकूत्याम् ) इस संकल्प में, (अस्याम् आशिष्यस्याम्) इस आशा की पूर्ति में, (देवहूत्याम्) दिव्यगुणों या विद्वानों के आह्वान में, (स्वाहा) यह उत्तम कथन हुआ है।

विषय

परमेश्वर से धर्म-कार्य में रक्षा की प्रार्थना।

भावार्थ

जैसे समस्त जलों का स्वामी (वरुणः) महान् समुद्र है। उसी प्रकार (अपां) व्यापक लोकों का और प्रजाओं का (अधि-पतिः) स्वामी (वरुणः) सर्वव्यापक, सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रभु है। (सः) वह (अस्मिन् ब्रह्मणि० इत्यादि) इन ब्रह्मोपासना वेदाध्ययन आदि शुभ कार्यों में (मा अवतु) मेरी रक्षा करे।

Meaning

Varuna is the presiding power of the cosmic waters. May Varuna protect and promote me in this holy pursuit of knowledge and prayer, in this holy act, in this priestly task, in this honourable undertaking, in this thought, in this resolution, in this benedition, and in this yajnic service to the divinities. This is the inner voice and prayer in truth.

Translation

The ocean (Varuna) is the Lord of waters; may he favour me in this prayér, in this rite, in this priestly representation, in this firm standing, in this intent (or idea), in this design, in this benediction, and in this invocation of the bounties of Nature. Svaha.

Translation

Varuna, the watery essence is the master-power of waters, let it protect me in this my attainment of knowledge, in this my act, in this my sacerdotal undertaking, in this my act of life's stability. in this intention, in this my deliberate activity, in this performance expectation and prosperity and in this my activity of yajna and science. Whatever is uttered here in is correct.

Translation

Just as Ocean is the lord of waters, so is God the Lord of worlds and His subjects. May He protect me, in this my study of the Vedas, in this duty of mine, in this my sacerdotal charge, in this noble performance, in this meditation, in this my resolve and determination, in this administration, in this assembly of the learned. May this noble prayer of mine be fulfilled.
