रक्षा के लिये प्रयत्न का उपदेश।

पदार्थ

(ततः) और भी (ते) वे (ततामहाः=तातामहाः) पूजनीयों के पूजनीय पुरुष (मा) मुझे (अवन्तु) बचावें, (अस्मिन्) इस (ब्रह्मणि) वेदज्ञान में, (अस्मिन् कर्मणि) इस कर्तव्य व्रत में, (अस्याम् पुरोधायाम्) इस पुरोहित पदवी में, (अस्याम् प्रतिष्ठायाम्) इस प्रतिष्ठा वा सत्क्रिया में, (अस्याम् चित्त्याम्) इस चेतना में, (अस्याम् आकूत्याम्) इस संकल्प वा उत्साह में, (अस्याम् आशिषि) इस अनुशासन में, और (अस्याम् देवहूत्याम्) इस विद्वानों के बुलावे में, (स्वाहा) यह आशीर्वाद हो ॥१७॥

भावार्थ

मनुष्य बड़ों से बड़े विद्वान्, योगी, शूर वीरों के आचरणों पर पूर्ण ध्यान देकर सदा शुभ कर्म करके परस्पर प्रीति और उन्नति करें ॥१७॥

पदार्थ

१. (तत:) = तब-उसके पश्चात् (ते) = वे (ततामहा:) = मेरे पौत्र भी (मा अवन्तु) = मेरा रक्षण करें। 'मेरे सच्चरित्र से उन्हें अपने कुल के गौरव का अनुभव होगा' यह सोचकर मैं कभी पथ-भ्रष्ट नहीं होऊगा। २. पौत्रों व प्रपौत्रों में यश का विचार मुझे उज्ज्वल चरित्रवाला बनाएगा। इसप्रकार मैं उत्तम कर्मों में ही अपना अर्पण करूँगा। शेष पूर्ववत् ।

भावार्थ

पौत्रों व प्रपौत्रों में कुल के गौरव को अनुभव कराने की भावना मुझे सत्कर्म में प्रवृत्त करती है।

भाषार्थ

(ततः तताः) तात आदि (मन्त्र १६), तथा (ततामहाः) तात आदि के पिता आदि, (तेमा अवन्तु) वे मेरी रक्षा करें। (अस्मिन् ब्रह्मणि) इस वेदज्ञान की प्राप्ति में, (अस्मिन् कर्मणि) इस वैदिक कर्म में, (अस्याम् पुरोधायाम्) इस संमुख-स्थापित अभिलाषा की पूर्ति में, (अस्याम् प्रतिष्ठायाम् ) इस दृढ़ स्थिति में, (अस्याम्, चित्त्याम्) इस स्मृतिशक्ति में, (अस्याम् आकूत्याम् ) इस संकल्प में, (अस्याम् आशिष्यस्याम्) इस आशा की पूर्ति में, (देवहूत्याम्) दिव्यगुणों या विद्वानों के आह्वान में, (स्वाहा) यह उत्तम कथन हुआ है।

विषय

परमेश्वर से धर्म-कार्य में रक्षा की प्रार्थना।

भावार्थ

(ततः) उनसे उतर कर (ततामहाः) हमारे सन्तानों के भी सन्तान हैं (ते) वे (मा० अवन्तु) मेरी (अस्मिन् ब्रह्मणि०) उक्त वेदाध्ययन, यज्ञ, पुरोहिताई, प्रतिष्ठा, ज्ञानमयी स्थिति, सद्विचार, सदाशा, विद्वत्सभा आदि सत्कार्यों में रक्षा करे। यही हमारी शुभ प्रार्थना है।

Subject

Self-Protection, Brahma Karma

Meaning

May our parents and grand parents and their parents protect and promote me in this divine process of living and learning, in this programme of work, in this priestly task of life, in this position of prestige, in this planned life, in this resolution of good living, in this blessed life and in this yajnic life dedicated to the divinities. This is the voice of truth from the depth of heart and soul in earnest prayer. (Life is a gift of our parents and our forefathers. It is a gift of Nature, and ultimately it is a gift of God. They that give never wish that it be wasted or destroyed, they protect it too and help us live it the way it is intended to be lived. This sukta suggests that we pray for protection and promotion, and we live it, through every thing we do, and every moment we live, for the personal, social and divine purpose and fulfilment for which it is meant.)

Translation

Fathers become grand fathers (tatas-tatamahah); may they favour me in this prayer, in this rite, in this priestly representation, in this firm-standing, in this intent (or idea), in this design, in this benediction, and in this invocation of the bounties of Nature. Svaha. (Each verse devoted to a separate Divinity - From Savitr to Tatamahah)

Translation

Tatamah, the men of mature knowledge, protect me in this attainment of Knowledge, in this my act, in this my sacerdotal undertaking, in this my act of life's stability, in this intention, in this my deliberate activity, in this performance expectation and prosperity and in this my activity of yajna and science. Whatever uttered herein is correct.

Translation

May the venerable of venerable persons preserve me, in this my study of the Vedas, in this duty of mine, in this my sacerdotal charge, in this noble performance, in this meditation, in this my resolve and determination, in thisadministration, in this assembly of the learned. May this noble prayer of mine be fulfilled.

१७−(ततः) अनन्तरम् (ततामहाः) म० १६। मातृपितृभ्यां पितरि डामहच्। वा० पा० ४।२।२६। इति तात−डामहच्, छान्दसो ह्रस्वः। पितॄणां पितरः। पूजनीयानां पूज्याः। अन्यद् गतम् ॥
